2016 Rosehill Guineas Nominations Feature 2 Fillies

March 14th, 2016

Just two fillies are nominated to take on the boys in the Rosehill Guineas 2016 this Saturday on Golden Slipper Day with Group 1 winners Jameka and Stay With Me out to break the hoodoo for the girls in the three-years-old classic.

A total of five elite level races run at Rosehill Racecourse this weekend including the $600,000 Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m), which hasn’t been won by a filly since Riverina Charm back in 1989.

The two brave females in the mix this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival are the Ciaron Maher-trained Crown Oaks winner Jameka and the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Thousand Guineas champ Stay With Me.

Both come off last start runs against the boys in similar class with Myboycharlie filly Jameka crossing fifth to Palentino in Flemington’s Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) and Street Cry filly Stay With Me fourth to Le Romain in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).

The better fancied of the two in pre-field Rosehill Guineas betting is Jameka who is yet to run at the track and who shoots for her first win since the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington last November.

Jameka currently sits second in the early Rosehill Guineas odds behind another Group 1 winner from the Melbourne Cup Carnival, Mick Price’s Victoria Derby champion Tarzino.

A three-year-old son of Tavistock, Tarzino heads towards a run in the $2 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick on April 2 via the Rosehill Guineas, which has produced more Derby winners than any other lead-up.

His latest start was in the Australian Guineas when beaten a mere short half-head for second, a run he’ll only improve on over the extra metres on Saturday.

The Randwick Guineas winner Le Romain is nominated to shoot for the double last achieved by It’s A Dundeel (2013), but is also entered for the weight-for-age George Ryder Stakes and Ranvet Stakes on the Slipper Day program.

Chris Waller has his dual Group 1 winning Hincinbrook colt Press Statement, who lost as the beaten favourite to Le Romain in the Randwick Guineas, in the same three Saturday races with the Rosehill Guineas his least likely target.

Waller though could still be represented in the capacity 18-starter Rosehill Guineas field by either Makfi colt Hursley or his Spring Champion Stakes winner from last October Vanbrugh who comes off an Australian Guineas sixth.

Two of the past three ATC Rosehill Guineas winners were New Zealand-trained with It’s A Dundeel (2013) for Murray Baker and the Donna Logan-trained Volkstok’n’barrell (2015) last year.

This season there are three New Zealand raiders in the mix with the James Bridge-trained Mackintosh, Bruce Wallace’s O’Reilly gelding Splendido and dual Group 1 winner Xtravagant who ran a disappointing eighth in the Australian Guineas in his Australian race debut.

Also among the nominations are Bjorn Baker’s Randwick Guineas third placegetter Gold Ambition and the well-fancied Montaigne coming off a fifth in the same race.

The full Rosehill Guineas 2016 nominations are detailed below, the field and barriers released on Wednesday.
