2016 Rosehill Guineas to Figure for Tarzino

December 16th, 2015

Tarzino was a standout for Mick Price through the recent Spring Carnival, and the Caulfield horseman has revealed the three-year-old will be set on the traditional path for three-year-old stayers through the approaching 2016 Autumn Carnival, including an appearance in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

Tarzino has more than stamped himself as one to follow through his short racing career so far; posting an impressive three wins and two minors through only six starts, peaking with success in the featured Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington most recently on October 31st.

Price told Racing.com the Tavistock gelding has taken plenty of benefit from his time away from racing and will likely contest the 2016 Rosehill Guineas third-up, however it will be his first race in Sydney for the preparation.

“I think four runs at this stage,” Price said.

“He had 31 days out so he’s an athletic horse and I’m going to bring him into Caulfield in about a week.

“He’s at the equestrian place at the moment doing a little bit of pre-training and he’ll come in very shortly and do some work.

“He’ll probably have one run into the Australian Guineas, then the Rosehill Guineas into the ATC Derby.

“It seems a bit short that preparation – a mile, 2000, two-four so I might have to throw another run in but he won’t be doing much more than that.”

Trialling well in the lead up to his competitive debut, Tarzino immediately stamped himself as a colt to follow when running third in the Racing.com Maiden Plate (1380m) in mid-July.

Posting a maiden win in the Slick Pix Maiden Plate (1400m) on August 27th, Tarzino repeated the dose in the Cove Hotel Handicap (1600m) three weeks later before running on for a credible seventh in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 10th.

Clearly relishing the continued step-up in distance, the colt out of Zarzino savaged the line for third in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) in his only other start prior to the Victoria Derby.

Tarzino is currently rated an $8 chance of success in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m); his likely final point of call ahead of the 2016 Rosehill Guineas.
