Jumping from the gates well, Volkstok’N’Barrell settled in prime position on the heels of early leaders Pounamu and found a great rhythm over the back straight and approaching the turn.

Continuing to steadily spool up and press forward, the Lord Tavistock gelding locked in an exciting sprint battle with Group 1 winner Preferment and two-time Group 1 winner Hallowed Crown, and while appearing to be fading in the final 200m, kicked well to hit the line a head in the clear.

Craig Williams delivered a typically good ride on Volkstok’N’Barrell for success in the 2015 Rosehill Guineas, and was thrilled repay trainer Donna Logan for placing her faith in him.

“He was funny in the run – he’s such a laid-back customer,” Williams said after crossing the line.

“He raced well for me and got a little unbalanced around the turn.

“Most importantly for Donna Logan, she lost her training partner and partner and she came here today and put on a brave face, the show goes on and there’s no doubt that Dean helped us get him over the line.

“I love the horse; I’ve had one ride on him. Very fortunate that Donna and the owners gave me the opportunity today.

“He still feels like a big baby and I just loved the way that he closed that race off; he was under pressure a fair way out.”

Donna Logan was on hand to witness Volkstok’N’Barrell’s maiden Group 1 victory this afternoon, revealing she is unsure whether or not he will progress to the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) in a fortnight.

“Gee he stood up and he really made us proud,” Logan said.

“Fantastic ride, Craig Williams – does he do his homework. He knew the horse inside and out as soon as I went out into the mounting yard with him and credit to him, he rode him beautifully.

“We’re good at home but when you get over here it’s a different ball game; these guys are tough, they’re good horses and you’re taking on world-class horses and world-class jockeys.”

“I’d really like his (Craig Williams) thoughts on hit to see if he thinks he’ll go at 2400 and thinks we’ll get the trip, then yeah I’d like to have a crack at it.”
