Nominations closed for the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) this morning, attracting 15 classy three-year-olds.
Headlining the field is perhaps the most impressive three-year-old in work right now – Hallowed Crown. The Bart & James Cummings-trained colt has impressively won six of his seven career starts and is already a two-time winner at the highest level of racing.
Hallowed Crown won the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) back in September before running fourth in the Group 2 Roman Consul (1200m) on October 4, which is the only race he hasn’t won.
Following a four month spell, the colt stepped back up to his ideal distance of 1400 metres to win the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes on February 21 followed up with another win in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 7.
He has yet to be tested over 2000 metres, which is why Hallowed Crown is dually nominated for the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m).
Following Hallowed Crown in the 2015 Rosehill Guineas nominations is John O’Shea’s Sweynesse, who has finished runner-up to the colt in both the Hobartville Stakes and Randwick Guineas this campaign. O’Shea has also nominated Gouldian, who was runner-up in a Benchmark 70 race over a mile on February 27.
Chris Waller could dominate the race field after nominating three of his stables three-year-olds: Kermadec, Preferment, and Quick Strike.
Kermadec was a winner of the Group 1 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) on November 1 but has failed to win any of his three starts this campaign, the best result of which was a minor placing in the Hobartville Stakes. He ran fourth in both the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m), finishing less than a length off the winners.
Preferment won the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) on November 1 but has failed to impress in either of his two starts this preparation, both of which were run below a mile. The colt will relish the step back up in distance over 2000 metres on Saturday.
Quick Strike has placed in seven of his eight career starts but the gelding has yet to debut at black-type level of racing.
Other horses nominated for the 2015 Rosehill Guineas include Group 1 Champion Stakes (2000m) winner Hampton Court, Michael Moroney’s Merion, and Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) runner-up Volkstok’n’barrel.
