Cox Plate champion Shamus Award ($8) took up the lead early in the 2000m race and stretched the field out before well backed favourite Puccini ($4.20) took up the running. The field bunched up into the final turn and fanned wide allowing Criterion ($14) to hug the inside rail and surge ahead to win by a commanding 3 1/2 lengths from a courageous Thunder Fantasy who claimed second from Teronado in third and Savvy Nature in fourth.

Puccini ended up 12th while Shamus award faded badly to finish second last in 14th. Equal favourite and Randwick Guineas champion Dissident finished 6th.

Criterion’s trainer David Payne was confident the colt would run well today despite finishing 8th last start in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas.

“He’s just becoming mature now, and he was ridden properly today, you’ve got to leave him alone” trainer David Payne said of Criterion after the race.

“He was just ridden upside down the other day, missed the break, chased a bit and over-raced.

“From day one we knew this is what he was looking for, the 2000(metres) plus

“We knew he’d finish it off, but we still didn’t know about the weather, if he could handle the wet, but looks like it isn’t a problem for him.”

Criterion, who has not been in the winners stall since the Group 2 Todman Stakes just over a year ago, has now amassed over $1million in prize money after today’s victory.

After today’s impressive win Criterion is set to be the new favourite for the 2014 Australian Derby at Royal Randwick on April 12.
