Exciting Field Nominated for 2014 Rosehill Guineas

March 24th, 2014

Talented three-year-old Eurozone will be aiming to secure a maiden Group 1 victory once and for all at Rosehill Gardens this weekend, having been included in nominations for the major Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

Having only contested nine race starts to date, Eurozone has quickly risen to prominence through several strong and consistent results at the highest level of Australian racing.

Winning the Listed Rosebud (1200m) and finishing sixth in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) before closing a memorable debut campaign with a comfortable victory in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) on September 28th, trainers Bart and James Cummings confirmed the Northern Meteor colt would only line up for major events over the 2014 autumn, who was unlucky to finish second by a nose to Moment Of Change in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) first-up on February 8th.

Having gained heavy support in betting markets over the 48 hours leading up to the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m), Eurozone was unable to match the late pace of eventual champion and fellow Rosehill Guineas nominee Shamus Award, finishing fourth.

Finishing a strong third in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) most recently, Team Cummings are confident  Eurozone will line up for the Rosehill Guineas in peak condition this Saturday.

Ending a strong 2013 spring preparation with a resounding victory in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 26th, Shamus Award has returned to the track in typically strong form this season, finishing third in the Orr Stakes first-up before leading from start to finish to secure the Australian Guineas and unluckily finishing sixth in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) last time out.

With a long view towards a defence of the Cox Plate in October, trainer Danny O’Brien has outlined the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) as the major target for the Snitzel colt this preparation, and will line up for this weekend’s Rosehill Guineas in peak condition.

Leading trainer David Payne has included exciting colt Criterion in nominations for the 2014 Rosehill Guineas.

While yet to hit peak condition in 2014, Criterion is a proven performer in autumn races, claiming the Listed Black Opal Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) before finishing sixth amongst a particularly talented Golden Slipper field in 2013.

Finishing a competitive second to Shamus Award in the Australian Guineas most notably this season, Criterion will contest the Rosehill Guineas before gearing up for a tilt at the Group 1 Australian Derby; arguably figuring as his biggest test in his racing career to date.

Having returned to the track in near-career best form in 2014, Peter Moody-trained Dissident finished second to El Roca in the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) first-up on February 15th before comfortably beating fellow Rosehill Guineas-nominee Atlante to the line in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400) and breaking through for a maiden Group 1 win in the Randwick Guineas last time out.

Moody, who has also included Cadillac Mountain in Rosehill Guineas nominations, is confident the talented Sebring colt will continue his strong run of form through this weekend, ahead of a likely tilt at the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) in April.

Trainer Anthony Cummings is set to be offered twice the chance of Rosehill Guineas success on Saturday after included both Thunder Fantasy and Surge Ahead in nominations.

Thunder Fantasy has experience something of a meteoric rise to prominence since debuting in April 2013, securing three wins and two places in only 10 starts.

Returning the track in particularly competitive form this season, the exciting Lucky Owners colt strolled home to win the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) first-up before finishing third in the Australian Guineas, and finally finding the line in the Australian Cup in an unlucky eighth.

Surge Ahead scored three wins from only four starts in his debut preparation, and is building towards career best form in 2014, finishing a strong third in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley most recently.

A total of 20 runners have nominated for the 2014 Rosehill Guineas, with a final field of 18 due to be released on Wednesday morning.
