This year the prestigious Rosehill Guineas Day at Sydney’s beautiful Rosehill Gardens Racecourse will take place on Saturday March 27.
The highlight event of the day will of course be the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m). This year the 2010 Rosehill Guineas is sponsored by Dubai and is worth $500, 000.
As always the Rosehill Guineas is expected to attract an elite field of three-year-olds, many of whom are on their way to the coveted $1.3 million Group 1 AJC Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on April 10, which is the richest race for three-year-olds at the Sydney autumn carnival.
Many of the quality gallopers on the Australian Derby campaign will contest the earlier set weight races for three-year-olds including the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) and the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).
This year the Hobartville Stakes was held on February 27 and was won by Monton. The Tim Martin-trained gelding is now a likely Rosehill Guineas nominee based on his performance in the Randwick Guineas on March 13.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained Manhattan Rain is another possible Rosehill Guineas starter this year. The Encosta De Lago colt will first run in the Group 1 Australian Guineas on March 7.
Punters are well advised to keep a close eye on the Randwick Guineas results as an indicator for their 2010 Rosehill Guineas bets as many of the same horses will contest and perform well in both set weights features.
Four other terrific Group status races are also scheduled for the March 27 meeting – the Group 2 Ajax Stakes, Group 2 Magic Night Stakes, Group 2 Darley Stakes and the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes.
Nominations for the 2010 Dubai Rosehill Guineas will close at 11:00am on Monday March 23. Next the weights will be allocated on Tuesday March 23 at 4:00pm. The final field of acceptances are due to be announced on Wednesday March 24 and will be published here.
