The 2016 Rosehill Guineas is scheduled to take place on Saturday 19th March, 2016.

The Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, which runs from February until the end of April each year, is host to New South Wales’ largest array of group races and one of the most exciting and entertaining periods on the Australian racing calendar.

The Group 1 Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m) is the key lead-up race to the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and the Group 1 event gives talented colts who are looking for a bit more ground the chance to score a win at the highest level of racing.

The Rosehill Guineas often determines the leading three-year-old colt or gelding of the season and the race is also the most significant lead-up race to the premier three-year-old event of the Autumn Carnival, the Group 1  ustralian Derby (2400m) held two weeks later.

This Rosehill Guineas – ATC Australian Derby duo is also one of the great betting doubles available for punters during the carnival and in 2013 It’s A Dundeel was able to complete the double.

Rosehill Guineas History

The Rosehill Guineas was first run in 1910, with Electric Wire taking out the inaugural edition of the race, and was originally classed as a Principal race.

It was elevated to Group 1 status in 1980 when the famous Kingston Town, who had over 20 Group 1 wins throughout his racing career, took out the race in impressive fashion.

Kingston Town isn’t the only equine superstar that has had success in the Rosehill Guineas; with Naturalism (1992), Octagonal (1996), Sky Heights (1999), Diatribe (2000) and It’s A Dundeel (2013) among the leading three-year-olds that have their name of the Rosehill Guineas honor roll, while back in 1929 Australia’s most celebrated race horse, Phar Lap, launched his spectacular career with a win in the Rosehill Guineas.
